What Is Steel Fabrication And Why Is It So Important?

Arc Attack Fabrication • Sep 10, 2021

Steel fabrication is one of the biggest heavy industries in the world, and it's easy to see why: Just about everything you use on a daily basis has some element of steel components in them, whether that's the bridge you take to work, the stairs in your house or the pipes that bring you water.

Steel fabrication is the method by which all of these millions upon millions of different items are made from the same type of raw steel. It's an art as much as it is a science, so how exactly do all those different things come from the same chunk of iron alloy? Let's take a look.

How It's Done

Steel mills around the world churn out billions of steel components every single day, and it's up to steel fabricators to turn these components into everyday items. Using a wide array of techniques like welding, burning, forming, moulding, cutting and machining, fabricators make everything from farm machinery to rollercoasters.

Using highly specialised tools and techniques that take years to learn, fabricators take raw steel and form it into just about every shape imaginable for a range of purposes: They roll it to make floors, they cut it to make shapes, they weld it together into structures and machine it into highly specialised tools and parts.

Why Is It Important?

The world consumes 1.8bn tonnes of steel every year, the highest figure in history and an increase of nearly 10x since 1950. The vast majority of that steel is turned into consumer goods of all kinds as well as civil and other engineering projects that supply the world with infrastructure.

Without steel fabrication, we wouldn't have all the amazing machines that produce everything from cars to computers to space rockets. We wouldn't have rigs to bring oil and gas to shore, we wouldn't have power stations to produce heat and light, we wouldn't have bridges, or cranes, or stadiums.

While all kinds of exotic materials have come and gone in industry, fabricated steel is still the backbone of the world economy. However, to keep that supply of exceptional quality steel coming, the world needs talented fabricators who can turn those raw materials into works of art and practical solutions to problems.
